Error 692 using a Blackberry 8707v as UMTS modem

Setting up my Blackberry as UMTS modem cost me some time though it’s well documented (BTW: Blackberry.com’s own search engine obviously doesn’t know this file. I found the link in a forum). When trying to start the dialup connection I always got an hardware error 692.

The trick is not to copy the modem init string (AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”) from the PDF and paste it to the modem settings. This will include the smart quotes from the original text. Now you’ve got a typographically accurate init string. Unfortunately modems usually don’t give a shit about typography. So the solution is to either type the complete init string by hand or at least to overwrite the quotes.
