flickr Bildschirmschoner
A propos flickr. Den Bildschirmschoner slickr habe ich hier ja noch gar nicht erwähnt. Lädt Photos nach Kriterien wie Tags, Gruppe oder Interestingness und zeigt sie leicht animiert an. Sehr hübsch, unterstützt einwandfrei einen zweiten Bildschirm und lädt dazu ein, einfach mal zuzuschauen.
Flickr-Geotagging
Wie bereits vermutet bietet Flickr inzwischen auch selbst eine Möglichkeit, Bilder mit Ortsinformationen zu versehen.
Schön, weil es keiner externen Tools mehr Bedarf; schön, weil es automatisch bereits entsprechend getaggte Fotos importiert und diese Informationen auch aus den EXIF-Daten ausliest (auch wenn die Option dafür ziemlich gut versteckt ist); schön, weil die Geo-Informationen nicht mehr als normale Tags angegeben werden müssen, sondern unter der Oberfläche verschwinden.
Aber nicht ganz so schön, weil die Karten von Yahoo! verwendet werden. Und deren Look&Feel und vor allem der Detailgrad hinken noch dem hinterher, was Google hier bietet, von Google Earth ganz zu schweigen. Zumal sämtliche Tools der Community zu dem Thema bisher fast ausschließlich auf Google Maps aufgebaut haben.
Dass Flickr als Yahoo!-Tochter nicht die Konkurrenz unterstützen darf, ist klar. Somit ist die Lösung nicht wirklich perfekt (hier das obligatorische „Und dabei hab‘ ich grad meinen Pro-Account verlängert“ hinzudenken), aber trotzdem eine willkommene Neuerung. Immerhin wird man wohl die Informationen per API ansprechen können. Angesichts der bekannten Experimentierfreude der Web-Gemeinde rund um Flickr ist also diesbezüglich noch einiges zu erwarten.
Update: Flickr selbst forciert das auch:
This also means: „hey, if our maps don’t work for you, use whatever maps you’d like!“ We expect the momentum of third party geo-based Flickr „mashups“ to continue and hopefully this will let developers take it to the next level since they don’t have to do their own spatial indexing any more, can enable private geo-data and get the new „accuracy“ and search-within-locations features thrown in. Go for it!

Naja, immerhin ist kein Druckverlust zu befürchten, wenn die im Zug rumballern. Es wird höchstens ein wenig zugig im Zug, haha.

Still, after eight days of detention, nobody has been charged with any crime. For there to be no clear evidence yet on something that was „imminent“ and „Mass murder on an unbelievable scale“ is, to say the least, rather peculiar. The 24th person, who was arrested amid much fanfare yesterday, has been quietly released without charge today. Breaking news, another „suspect“ has just been released too.

The idea that high explosive can be made quickly in a plane toilet by mixing at room temperature some nail polish remover, bleach, and Red Bull and giving it a quick stir, is nonsense. Yes, liquid explosives exist and are highly dangerous and yes, airports are ill equipped to detect them at present. Yes, it is true they have been used on planes before by terrorists. But can they be quickly manufactured on the plane? No.
The sinister aspect is not that this is a real new threat. It is that the allegation may have been concocted in order to prepare us for arresting people without any actual bombs.
Let me fess up here. I have just checked, and our flat contains nail polish remover, sports drinks, and a variety of household cleaning products. Also MP3 players and mobile phones. So the authorities could announce – as they have whispered to the media in this case – that potential ingredients of a liquid bomb, and potential timing devices, have been discovered. It rather lowers the bar, doesn’t it?
